The Front Range is not a heavily treed region — except exactly where its oldest suburbs are. In places like Littleton’s mid-century blocks, sixty-year-old maples and cottonwoods drop leaves every autumn and cotton every June, and it all lands in the two places a roof can least afford blockage: valleys and gutters.

Standing debris changes how a roof ages

A valley is designed to move water fast; debris turns it into a slow, damp channel where shingles stay wet long after the rest of the roof has dried. A blocked gutter overflows at the eave and puts water against fascia and foundation — the exact edge the drainage was built to protect. Neither failure involves the covering wearing out; both shorten its life anyway, and both are invisible from the ground until the staining starts.

On shaded north slopes under canopy, the same moisture lingers on the field itself. The practical rhythm in the older suburbs is simple: valleys and gutters cleared after leaf drop and checked after cotton season, and any evaluation of the roof done with the trees in mind — because two identical houses, one under canopy and one in the open, do not have identical roofs.
