How the damage reads

The sequence is consistent. First, granules collect in the gutters — the mineral surface that shields the asphalt is leaving. Then the exposed asphalt dries and the shingle edges curl or cup. Finally the material goes brittle enough that ordinary expansion and contraction cracks it. None of this looks dramatic from the street until the last stage, which is why age plus a gutter check tells you more than a glance at the roofline.

Why the two sides of one roof differ by years

South- and west-facing slopes take several times the UV dose of north-facing ones, and at this altitude the difference compounds fast: it is routine here for one side of a roof to need replacement while the other still looks mid-life. An honest evaluation grades the slopes separately — and a homeowner checking their own roof should start on the south side, because that is where the truth is.
